Hunter (Brassica rapa spp. campestris) is a hybrid cross between a turnip and a rape, producing one of the fastest maturing brassicas, with a style similar to a leafy, non-bulb producing turnip. Spitfire (Brassica napus) is a cross between a kale and a rape. Mainstar (Brassica napus) is a cross between kale and turnip. Both Mainstar and Spitfire are commonly termed forage rapes. These different genetic make-ups have resulted in very different characteristics. The following diagram summarises these characteristics and how they relate to their suitability for different farming systems.
